E-Bike Cargo Trailers – Everything You Need To Know

#1. Juiced Scorpion X

Electric Bikes with Dog carriers-
Juiced Scorpion X

If you’re really serious about purchasing a passenger-friendly e-bike that will provide extra comfort for your dog, perhaps you ought to consider a dual-suspension electric bicycle like the Juiced Scorpion X.

The Juiced Scorpion X is a 750W e-bike that comes with both front and rear suspension (the front end of the bike is cushioned by hydraulic forks while the rear end utilizes a dual coil spring system to mitigate shock).

Juiced Scorpion X: Dual Suspension

It comes with a sturdy rear rack that is compatible with various rack accessories. You can mount a pet-friendly basket on this rack or secure a pannier bag to the rack’s tubing if you don’t want to use a trailer (or if you already have one dog in tow).

This provides riders with even more room to carry their pets. You want to be careful with overloading the rack though as it can only support 50 lbs (22.7 kg) of weight.

Juiced Scorpion X: Rear Rack and Fenders

The Scorpion X is also a very decent e-bike power-wise. Its high-performance motor is capable of delivering 1800 Watts of power. That’s more than enough power to haul a big dog.

Check Best Price

Pros

1) It is equipped with a lot of utilities

The Juiced Scorpion X comes fitted with front and rear aluminum mudguards, a super loud 100db electronic horn, a large 2000 Lumen headlamp, a led taillight that also functions as the bikes brake lights, and optional mirrors.

2) The bike has a very accommodative weight capacity

The Juiced Scorpion X can support up to 275 lbs (125 kg) in total payload. This makes it suitable for heavy riders who might want to carry their dogs instead of pulling them in a pet trailer.

3) The Juiced Scorpion X is powerful enough to haul a big dog

Unlike most of the other budget-friendly electric bikes available on the market, the Juiced Scorpion is actually very powerful. This e-bike’s motor can put out up to 1800 Watts of power at peak performance.

That’s more than enough power to haul an adult Cane Corso (which can weigh anywhere between 100 lbs and 150lbs).

Cons

1) It is a very bulky electric bike

The Juiced Scorpion X weighs about 100 lbs (45 kg) and measures up to 67.5” (171.5cm) in length. So you see, not only will you have a hard time storing this eBike, you’ll have to be really strong to carry it around.

2) It might be a bit difficult to find a front rack that’ll fit onto the frame of this e-bike

The Juiced Scorpion X’s headlight takes up much of the space on the bike’s head tube. This makes it almost impossible to install a front rack on the bike, let alone mount an electric bike dog basket on the head tubes.

#2. Aventon Aventure

Top Electric Bikes With Dog Carrier 1

Easily one of the most powerful electric bikes under $2000, the Aventon Aventure is a fat-tire e-bike that’s well known for its superior loading capacity. Don’t let the bike’s frame design fool you though, this mountain bike is designed to hold up more weight than most cargo electric bikes on the market.

According to Aventon, the Aventure is built to support up to 400 lbs of weight; that’s 14% more weight capacity than the RadWagon 4. With a frame that sturdy, you never have to worry about overloading your bike with your dogs even when you have to take them with you to pick up groceries.

Aventon Aventure: Hub Motor

The bike also comes with a 750W motor that puts out up to 1130W of power at peak performance and a 48V 15Ah lithium-ion battery that can store up enough energy for 30 to 40-mile rides.

Aventure Ebike

Pros

1) New Aventure models come standard with an advanced color display

The Aventure comes with an intuitive color display that helps riders monitor their speed, battery consumption, trip distance, mileage, and pedal-assist level. It also has a USB port that allows riders to charge their smart devices on the go.

The device also synchronizes with the Aventon smartphone app to provide even better tracking of your stats.

2) The bike’s frame is super sturdy

As stated earlier, the Aventon Aventure has a very accommodative payload capacity (400 lbs). With it, you can carry up to three members of your family (a little human and two dogs) on leisurely rides.

That’s pretty impressive for a bike that doesn’t necessarily identify as a cargo e-bike.

3) The Aventure’s tires are suitable for riding in almost all conditions

This electric bike will perform just fine on snow, sand, gravel, etc. Its 4-inch-wide pneumatic tires are built to float over almost any kind or texture of terrain.

Their extra thickness allows them to maximize grip, making the bike suitable for riding on wet and loose surfaces.

Cons

1) It is a heavy electric bike

The Aventon Aventure might not be as heavy as the Juiced Scorpion X, but it does weigh almost two times as much as a budget-friendly lightweight e-bike. It is, however, a stronger bike, pound for pound, than the Scorpion X.

#3. RadWagon 4

RadWagon 4

One glance at the RadWagon 4 and you can immediately tell that it is designed to accommodate more than 1 passenger. This bike comes with a frame-integrated rear rack that’s long enough to accommodate two baskets (maybe even three small ones mounted side-by-side).

The bike also has front basket mounts pre-drilled into its head tube, creating extra room for you to put your furry friend. Power-wise, the RadWagon 4 is a pretty decent electric bike.

RadWagon 4: Rear Rack

It comes with a geared rear hub-motor that puts out up to 750 Watts of power. This motor is able to propel the bike to top speeds of 20mph in both pedal- and throttle-assist modes.

The bike’s 48V 14Ah battery can reportedly power the bike for up to 40 miles on a single charge.

Pros

1) Its frame accommodates a wider range of riders

Thanks to the RadWagon 4’s telescoping seatpost, users between 5’1” and 6’4” tall won’t find it uncomfortable to ride the bike.

2) It is an affordable cargo electric bike

The RadWagon 4 is one of the most affordable cargo e-bikes available on the market currently. Below is a table comparing the RadWagon 4 to other popular electric cargo bikes.

Cons

1) It has no suspension

Riding on rough terrain with the RadWagon 4 might be a bit uncomfortable because the bike comes with rigid forks.

It would have been nice if Rad Power Bikes had installed at least one suspension system on the bike.

2) It’ll be hard to find replacements for the bike’s tires

The RadWagon 4 is fitted with 22” x 3” custom tires that help improve balance (smaller diameter wheels = lower center of gravity = better stability). The bad thing, however, is that you might have a hard time finding replacements for any of these tires if they ever got damaged.

Can You Pull a Dog Trailer With an Ebike

Electric bikes are capable of pulling almost any kind of trailer. Whether it’s a pet, kid, or cargo trailer, hauling requires way less effort on an electric bike (even low-powered models) than it does on a regular bicycle.

Is It Illegal to Cycle With a Dog

It is not illegal to cycle with a dog in the US. This is as long as you keep the dog on a leash (if you decide to let the dog run alongside you) and ensure you have one hand on the handlebars at all times.

However, there are some regions around the world that don’t allow riders to cycle with their dogs. For example, in Queensland, Australia, cycling with a dog on a leash is considered unsafe to the rider, the dog, and other road users.

Do Dogs Like Bike Trailers

It might take a little bit of time for your dog to get used to riding in a bike trailer. Dogs are smart creatures. Sitting inside a pet carrier for even a short time can make them feel trapped.

No products found.

So, you want to slowly get them accustomed to being inside the trailer first before taking them out on long rides. The best way to get this done is to place the trailer somewhere where the dog can sniff and get comfortable with it.

Then slowly transition to taking your canine friend out on short trips inside the trailer. Before you know it, your dog will love accompanying you on rides in his/her trailer.

Wag Walking has a whole article on how to train your dog to ride in a bike trailer. You might want to check that post out for a more detailed guide on the subject.

How Do I Take My Dog on an Electric Bike With Dog Carrier

There are various ways to carry your dog with you on bike rides. One of the most popular methods is putting your dog inside a bike basket.

No products found.

This option allows you to keep an eye on your dog as you ride along. There are a lot of pet-friendly baskets on Amazon that can be easily attached to a bike’s handlebars or rear rack.

Another option would be hauling your dog in a trailer. This method is probably best for riders whose dogs can’t fit inside a basket carrier.

Riders who own very large dogs — like Great Danes — might have to settle with allowing their dogs trot alongside them because it might be hard to find a bike carrier for large dogs.

A bike leash will be best for this approach as it allows you to exercise your dog without necessarily taking your hands off the bike.

Can I Ride My Bike With a Dog on a Leash

In general, riding an electric bike with a dog on a leash is not against the law. However, there are some areas that prohibit this practice because it is deemed unsafe to all parties involved.

How Do You Attach an Ebike to a Dog Trailer

In most cases, securing a dog trailer to an electric bike doesn’t take more than 30-40 minutes. Most electric bike dog trailers available on the market today come with a hitch that attaches to the wheels axle on the side of the right dropout.

No products found.

The bike attachment connects the trailer’s hitch arm to the bike and can be locked in place using a pin. A lot of trailer manufacturers employ this same attachment system so you shouldn’t face any difficulty finding a tutorial video on how to attach your trailer to your e-bike.

How Much Weight Can an E-bike Pull

An electric bike’s payload capacity is quite different from its towing capability. How much weight an electric bike’s components can bear does not automatically translate into the amount of weight that the bike can haul.

This was proven by a bicycle enthusiast on YouTube who replaced his regular bike’s rear cog with a 72-tooth cog and was able to haul a 6000-pound (about 3 US tons) jeep. What’s more interesting is that the bike he used to achieve this incredible feat wasn’t equipped with a motor at the time.

So, you see, most e-bikes are capable of pulling more weight than they can support. A realistic weight range for most electric bikes should be between 200 and 400 lbs.

How Far Can I Bike With My Dog

A good rule of thumb would be to cover very short trips on the first few weeks of you riding alongside your dog. This should help get your dog acclimated to the mode of travel you eventually employ.

Slowly lengthen your travel distance as your dog gets more comfortable riding with you. Some dogs are able to cover up to 20 miles riding alongside their owners.

Best Rear Mounted Electric Bikes With Dog Carriers

There are many different types of ebike carriers available, from simple panniers to more elaborate designs so there should be something out there that will fit your pooch.

If you’re going to purchase a rear-mounted carrier for your dog you want to make sure it is sturdy enough to hold your four-legged friend’s weight. It also has to be well ventilated so your dog doesn’t get uncomfortable or anxious inside it.

We’ve done some of the hard work for you by picking out some of the best bike dog carriers. Check them out below.

Best Front Mounted Electric Bikes With Dog Carriers

Front-mounted dog carriers — like baskets — offer cyclists the best opportunity to monitor their dogs while they ride. For the safety of your dog, you want to make sure that whatever front basket you purchase comes with a very secure attaching mechanism and a bunch of tethers (or a safety leash) to prevent your dog from getting thrown off the bike.
