Are Hoverboards Waterproof? The Truth About Water Resistance!

If you’re thinking of buying a hoverboard you may be wondering, are hoverboards waterproof?

Are Hoverboards Waterproof?

Walk, don’t hoverboard in wet conditions!

And if so, which ones are safe to use around water? Most (but not all) hoverboards have a waterproof rating of “IP54”. The IP rating (International Protection Marking) gives a more accurate description of how resistant a product is to water, rather than just calling it “waterproof”, as there are different levels of water resistance.

Many people think that when they read “water resistant” a product will be 100% safe to use in water, but that’s definitely not the case.

IP54 actually means that the product is protected from water spray in any direction.

In terms of a hoverboard, we can take that to mean it’s okay to use in light rain, however I wouldn’t recommend using it in heavy rain or extremely wet conditions. It’s protected from light splashes, but it’s best not to travel through puddles. If you’re on an off road hoverboard its also not a good idea to ride through wet grass as that could be too much water exposure for your board.

If it starts raining the best thing you can do to protect your board is to put it inside a waterproof carry bag and not use it. This is an electrical item with a battery and many components that could be damaged by immersion in water, so if in doubt, it’s better to walk. Hoverboards with water damage can be very expensive to repair (up to $200) so we recommend not risking getting them wet.

So in answer to the question “are self balancing scooters waterproof”? The answer is no, not really – if you see a scooter rated as IP54 water resistant it’s NOT waterproof. Although your hoverboard will survive splashes or sprays of water, it’s best that you don’t use them in wet conditions and keep them away from water as much as possible.

Are Hoverboards Waterproof: What about IPX4?

This is a slightly better water resistance in that it offers protection from splashes of water in any direction, for at least 5 minutes. Usually only off road hoverboards have this level of water resistance, for example the Swagtron T6, Halo Rover and Halo Rover X.

Basically, whatever water resistance rating your hoverboard has, it is NOT 100% waterproof so make sure to treat it as such.

If you want to clean your hoverboard, don’t immerse it in water – just wipe it with a damp cloth. It just takes a bit of common sense really. Treat your scooter like you would any item with electrical components e.g. your smartphone (smartphones tend to have higher IP ratings than hoverboards). Would you want to drop it in a puddle, or let it sit out in heavy rain? No, I’m sure you wouldn’t.
